Leon de Bliquy (1943-) is a renowned South African artist and academic with Belgian roots whose exhibitions, written works and media recognition spans several decades. He makes poetry visible, drawing luminous imagery from the deep recesses of his introspective mind since from an early age his world was perceived through blunted sight. He references the animated folklore of the Koi San sharing their elemental capacity to metamorphose their surroundings into tales of magical shamanic import. He is a powerful image maker who recognizes the edge of reality in his horizon line, that division between the conscious and unconscious mind. The metaphysical, mythology, poetry, literature, the eternal adventure in the exploration of being as well as the majestic Cape Mountains which inspired him to employ metaphoric substances to create perceptions that evoke "Spirit of Place", all have been a constant source of inspiration to him. |
