The Ndebele Wedding Ceremony is one of the most graceful and colourfully ordained tapestries that the Kraal Gallery has done. Mrs Funi Sibeko used an array of colour to symbolize the tribe as she knows them. In this tapestry one clearly sees that the top naked lady is about to “fall through” the tapestry, past clusters of leaves to finally be received by her two bridesmaids. This ritual is significant for both cleansing and fertility prior to arriving at the altar. The village elders (ladies) are gathered to witness the ritual and ensure all prayers are with the bride-to-be and her ability to bear children. |
