The life of Noringi Gwashu

– as written by herself but transcribed in English

Title: Weaverbird

My Name is Noringi Gwashu. I was born on the 13 March 1970 in Nqamakwe in the Eastern Cape. I grew up there with my mother and my father. When I was 6 yrs old I went to a primary school called Jojweni P.P School.

My father passed away when I was 11yrs old. My mother then decided to go to Cape Town to look for a job. She left us with my grand mother. When I passed Grade 9 I went to high school called Colosa S.S.S in Idutyweup until I passed grade 12.

When I passed grade 12 my mother took me to Cape Town so that I could continue with my studies; but my result was bad. That forced me to go to Lagunya Finishing in Langa. My mother was working for Nuns in Langa under Sister Alfreda doing spinning.

When I passed grade 12 I didn’t have time to continue because I fell pregnant to my daughter of 18yrs old now. Because there was not enough money to support me and the baby I decided to look for a job. I spoke with my friend and she took me to St Elmo’s restaurant - N1 city Mall. I worked there for 7 years. The shop closed down. I stayed at home for 6 months not working and then I went to see Sister Alfreda to ask for a job who gave me a phone number to call Nazeema. I phoned and she asked me to come for an interview. I went for an interview in Somerset West where I got a job as a weaver. It was my first time seeing floor rugs and wall carpets being done by hands. I was not sure if I could make it myself with my own hands but I promised to do. The owner promised to offer a 6 months course that is where I took all concentration to try to do the best rugs and tapestries. I experienced to work with a lot of people weaving a lot of different designs. Now I can design anything that I want to design.
